Invisalign® clear aligners allow you to improve the alignment of your teeth without ruining the way your teeth look. Before the creation of Invisalign®, many adults held off getting the treatments they needed simply because they did not want to deal with any of the hassles that traditional metal braces come with. This often ended up making their teeth alignment worse, as they do not get the treatment they need.

How Invisalign® works

Treatment with Invisalign® involves using a series of aligner trays to improve a person's teeth alignment. These aligner trays are made with clear, smooth plastics, and they are worn for a couple of weeks before being switched with another. Each aligner further down in the series pushes the person's teeth closer to the desired position.

Invisalign® works similarly to conventional braces. The trays apply a constant force on the wearer's teeth, gradually pushing them to a better alignment over time. Traditional metal braces do the same thing, but with metal brackets and wires instead.

The average length of treatment with Invisalign® is a year, and that is often shorter than the time it takes to fix the same issue with metal braces. Invisalign® applies more precise forces on each of the patient's teeth, leading to more effective treatment.

Figuring out if Invisalign® is right for you

Here are the things that a general dentist will go over while trying to decide if clear aligners are best for a patient.

The cause of the patient's poor teeth alignment: Invisalign® clear aligners can only be used to fix poor teeth alignment caused by improper positioning of the patient's teeth. Alignment problems caused by bad jaw positioning typically require metal braces or other alternatives.

The patient can follow the recommended schedule: Invisalign® aligners need to be worn for over 20 hours each day for the patient's treatment to be effective. People who might have a hard time remembering to wear their aligners as recommended each day might be better off with an oral appliance that is fixed in place.

The patient is looking for discreet treatment: Invisalign® aligner trays are virtually impossible to notice when worn, which is the opposite of traditional metal braces, which are impossible to miss. Invisalign® provides a discreet teeth-straightening solution for those who would rather keep their treatment private.

The patient finds braces too restrictive: One of the major downsides of traditional metal braces is the fact it is fixed in place. It gets in the way during meals or brushing sessions. Invisalign® aligners are removable devices, so the patient can easily take them out them for meals and oral hygiene. It makes it easier to keep tooth decay at bay.
