Lasers have been a common weapon of science fiction novels and comic books, but lasers can now be useful in the hands of a dentist. While laser dentistry is not a magic beam of light that produces perfect teeth, it can help simplify many dental procedures and create a painless experience without the need for sedation.
What is laser dentistry?
Laser dentistry involves the use of FDA approved medical laser to help fight off infection, gum disease and more. This alternative form of treatment allows patients to receive the necessary dental care for common gum problems without needing to use metal dental tools.
A complaint some people may have about the dentist is that their gums start bleeding during the cleaning or procedure. Due to the pain from the bleeding gums, patients may attempt to avoid the necessary treatments or regular checkups in the future. It is at these checkups that a dentist will be able to catch the early signs of gum disease and other infections.
The American Dental Association lists a variety of procedures that laser dentistry can help simplify, including:
- Sulcular debridement (Curettage)
- Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure
- Reduction of bacteria level
- Laser wound healing and root planning
- Aid in diagnosis of caries (tooth decay)
- Hard tissue applications
Thanks to laser dentistry, patients are able to leave the dentist with little to no discomfort. Patients are also able to complete the procedure in the same amount of time it would have taken with regular dental tools. A dental professional will be able to examine one’s teeth and decide if dental lasers are the best method.
There’s still much to learn
The list above contains some of the possible applications lasers can have on a patient’s teeth. However, it is important to seek professional counsel from a dentist before getting a heart set on one type of treatment. The ADA explains that hard tissue applications involve “the ablation of caries, enamel, and dentin.”
The ADA adds that dentists can use specific forms of lasers to perform cavity preparations without needing to use anesthetic. Dental lasers are an efficient alternative for the situation when other dental tools may not cut it. “Lasers, as a group, have inconsistently demonstrated the ability to reduce microorganisms within a periodontal pocket,” the ADA states. During a procedure with dental lasers, a patient will wear protective glasses over the eyes. The patient can sit back and relax, not having to cringe at the pain of metal scraping on teeth.
While there is still much to learn about the applications and effects of dental lasers, they may be the right choice for your treatment. Your dentist will be able to discern if dental lasers are the best choice for your overall health. If you are curious about the use of a dental laser in your treatment, consult your dentist for information.
