FDA Clearance

Recognition by the FDA Feb 4, 2002

Millennium Dental Technologies has been granted FDA clearance to market its revolutionary PerioLase(R) dental laser for gingival incision and excision and laser curettage (removal of diseased or inflamed soft tissue in the periodontal pocket), according to company founders Delwin K. McCarthy, D.D.S. and Robert H. Gregg II, D.D.S.

Designed by clinicians for clinicians, the PerioLase(R) demystifies the dental laser, providing a breakthrough treatment for gum disease with a proprietary procedure called Laser Periodontal Therapy(TM). "LPT(TM) is a patient- and practitioner-friendly alternative to traditional surgery. It's the first periodontal procedure ever granted a patent and the only stand alone procedure that cost-justifies the purchase of a laser," notes Dr. McCarthy.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 60% of the population has moderate to severe gum disease, but fewer than 3% receive treatment. "Periodontal surgery is invasive. It's not something patients readily accept," says Dr. Gregg. "But the PerioLase(R) and LPT(TM) make treatment as easy as wiping chalk off a blackboard. LPT(TM) can be done in any general or specialty setting. There's no cutting of flaps, no sutures and a minimum of bleeding." Preservation of original gum tissue is maximized, so appearances are preserved and root exposure and increased sensitivity are avoided. Other patient-friendly benefits such as 50% less chair time, lower cost, quicker recovery and almost no time lost from work give this procedure tremendous practice-building potential. "In 2001, optometrists performed 1.5 million Lasik procedures. We believe PerioLase(R) will have the same kind of patient appeal," adds Gregg.

PerioLase(R) is the first digital dental laser released in the U.S. and the only one with 7 different pulse durations. To ensure proficiency, attendance at a 3-day Laser Boot Camp(TM) for hands-on training is mandatory, with two one-day advanced sessions at six month intervals.

Other dentist-specific features include:

  • TrueFlex(TM) handpiece with bendable canula to access all mouth areas,
  • Automatically configured laser dosages (no recalculating for different pocket depths),
  • The first procedure-driven menu,
  • Tiltable touch screen for easy viewing,
  • TruePulse -- free-running (FR) pulse laser emits true pulses of super-high peak power with durations in the millionths of a second. This delivers greater precision and control of the laser beam with superior tissue iinteraction.

The Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry (IALD) today announced that its laser training program for dentists, called Laser BootCamp™, has received from the American Dental Association the prestigious Continuing Education Recognition Program approval, otherwise known as ADA-CERP.

According to the ADA, “The American Dental Association's Continuing Education Recognition Program (ADA CERP) has been in operation since 1993. The ADA CERP evaluates and approves institutions and organizations that provide continuing education (CE). Recognizing the need to offer its members and the dental community a way to select continuing education with confidence, the ADA started the ADA CERP in conjunction with a group of organizations representing the dental profession. The ADA CERP is managed by a standing committee of the Council on Dental Education and Licensure that includes representatives of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Dental Examiners, the American Association of Dental Schools, the Canadian Dental Association and the organizations representing the recognized dental specialties.

The ADA CERP evaluates providers in 15 aspects of program quality. Only CE providers that can meet the ADA CERP's standards and procedures are granted ADA CERP approval and are authorized to use the ADA CERP logo and/or approval statement on their publications. Once approved, CE providers are held accountable for maintaining those same high standards. The ADA CERP does not approve the specific courses or the credit hours that recognized providers offer.”

The Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry is currently the only United States laser training Institute in active operation that has the ADA-CERP recognition and can award CE credits to dentists who are attending training for lasers.

The IALD works in association with Millennium Dental Technologies, Inc, a manufacturer of the PerioLase II--the first laser designed and dedicated to the treatment of severe gum disease--specifically for use in the patented Laser Periodontal Therapy™.
